Sharing the love of dance
Elizabeth Johnson (pictured), a 12th-grade student at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting. The award is given for demonstrating leadership in community service and completing an 80-hour service project. Fewer than five percent of Girl Scouts achieve the honor. To earn the award, Elizabeth created The Freedom of Dance program, an after-school dance program at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School. She taught dance technique and basic dance vocabulary, and choreographed dances for the students to learn in weekly classes and a summer dance clinic. The program will continue even after Elizabeth graduates this year. Members of the Duchesne Charger Girl dance team will take over so the students at Our Lady of Guadalupe can continue their dance education.
