Summer Reading

Cindy Burnett vetted more than 200 books to curate a Summer Reading Guide for 2023. Here, she shares her list plus other guides.

One of my favorite things about summer is browsing all of the summer reading lists, seeing how they overlap, finding hidden gems, and learning about books that had not been on my radar. Some lists focus on beach reads, while others include a wide variety of titles from many genres. Certain guides choose books already out in the world while others focus on titles releasing in the summer, and often lists are a combination of the two.

I include below some of my favorite lists for summer 2023 as well as my own Summer Reading Guide for 2023. This year’s list was a monumental undertaking for me. More books than I have ever seen have come out in the last year and trying to check out as many as possible before deciding what to put on the guide was quite a project. I ended up vetting over 200+ books: some I finished and loved, some I really enjoyed but couldn’t find a place for them on the guide, and others I only made it through 20-30 pages before realizing it was not for me or was not going to be a fit for the list.

Whether you are heading out on vacation, hanging out at your local pool or just enjoying a staycation, check out one or more of these guides to find a book to bring with you:

  1. Thoughts from a Page Summer Reading Guide for 2023: I divide my summer list into ten categories and select my favorites from the past year or so as well as some fabulous upcoming releases that will provide great summer entertainment.
  2. Kelly Hook’s Summer Books by Kelly Hooker of @kellyhook.readsbooks: Kelly’s guide contains tons of outstanding recommendations and is always my favorite list to peruse. Most of the books are already out, but some will publish in the summer.
  3. Modern Mrs. Darcy’s 2023 Minimalist Summer Reading Guide: She has a more in-depth guide that you can purchase, but in this list of 12 titles, she highlights her favorites for summer 2023.
  4. Entertainment Weekly’s The 27 Best New Books to take on Your 2023 Summer Vacation:  A creative list with books that will be publishing as summer progresses.
  5. Reader’s Digest’s 21 New Summer Books for 2023 That You Won’t Be Able to Put Down: This list is a combination of books that have published recently and ones coming out over the summer.

I hope you enjoyed reviewing these reading lists and feel free to comment below with the summer reading lists that you find and enjoy. Happy reading!
