1,143 miles to see Messi

The Carlton family

Johnny, Amelie, Henry, and Chuck Carlton (pictured, from left) watched Lionel Messi’s debut with Major League Soccer Club Inter Miami. Johnny and Henry, both avid soccer fans, knew the family was traveling to Miami, but tickets to the big game featuring their favorite player were a surprise. Wearing #10 shirts and holding a sign that read “1,143 miles to see Messi,” the Carlton family witnessed history with the superstar’s inaugural appearance that included a last-minute goal. Both boys played soccer for St. Mark’s Episcopal School, and Henry also played with RISE Soccer Club. Amelie is a former soccer player and says seeing Messi was even better than winning the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) championship back in the day when her Holland Hall high-school team beat St. John’s School in a shootout.
