Livestock and scholarships
Stratford High School senior Isabelle Coates (pictured) raised a red brangus heifer named Ruby as part of the Spring Branch Future Farmers of America (SBFFA). In addition to caring for Ruby, she serves as FFA chapter sentinel and will represent the state of Texas at the upcoming national FFA competition in the veterinary sciences division. SBFFA is a student-run organization in the Spring Branch Independent School District’s agricultural sciences department. Students learn leadership and career skills in classrooms and laboratories located on the district’s 17-acre Agricultural Science Center Farm and can earn scholarship funds through the SBFFA Annual Show and Sale. The 46th annual event is scheduled for Feb. 8-10, 2024, and students will showcase and sell livestock they have raised, including steers, pigs, lambs, goats, turkeys, broilers, and rabbits.
