Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to This Weekend
Happy Friday! Here are some weekend highlights:
30th Annual MLK Grande Parade
The (rescheduled) 30th Annual MLK Grande Parade will be held on Saturday in Midtown Houston, starting on San Jacinto Street and Elgin Street at 10 a.m. Watch live on the CW 39-Houston or join in person. The parade is free and open to the public.
Third Annual Eat Drink HTX
The third annual Eat Drink HTX, the sister event to Houston Restaurant Weeks (HRW) produced by The Cleverley Stone Foundation, kicked off yesterday and lasts until Feb. 29. The two-week long Eat Drink HTX has been developed for the casual dining category, with a lower price point set for prix fixe brunch, lunch, and dinner menus. Participating restaurants will make donations based on their sales to benefit the Houston Food Bank and DePelchin Children’s Center.
Lunar New Year at Viet Hoa Center
Celebrate Lunar New Year with the city's largest free, community-wide celebration of the Year of the Dragon at the Viet Hoa Center. On Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m.–5:15 p.m., the festival will feature a hundred lions and dragons and one million lucky red firecrackers, delicious food, fun games, and live performances.
Black History Experience at Children's Museum Houston
Celebrate Black history at the Children’s Museum this Saturday by exploring African cultures and traditions with music and dance performances, learning about significant periods in history, and engaging in stories about courage, survival, and resilience. Museum admission is $17 for adults and children, and free for children under one.
Ruby's Chinese New Year at Children's Museum Houston
On Saturday at 3 p.m., you can become part of Houston Grand Opera's "Ruby's Chinese New Year,” at the Children’s Museum Houston. “Ruby's Chinese New Year” is an interactive storybook opera experience where every turn of the page brings you closer to the revelation of Ruby's chosen companion. Will it be the clever Rat, the strong Ox, or the cautious Rabbit? Museum admission is $17 for adults and children, and free for children under one.
Family Day at Bayou Bend: 'The Cup That Cheers'
Visit Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens on Sunday for a free afternoon of family-friendly fun discovering the histories of three hot beverages: tea, coffee, and chocolate. From 1-4 p.m., enjoy art-making activities and performances inspired by tea leaves, cocoa beans, and the trade centers that cultivated the spread of the crops.
The Year of the Dragon at The Galleria
The Galleria and Asia Society Texas celebrate the Lunar New Year with free cultural festivities on level 1 near Louis Vuitton and level 1 near Nordstrom. Events will be held 12-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The celebration will include performances by Dance of Asian America, Han Narea, a Lion Dance performance from Shaolin Kung Fu Academy. Several retailers at The Galleria also have special Lunar New Year offerings.
College Baseball: Rice Owls vs. Notre Dame
The Rice Owls Baseball team opens the spring season playing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish today at 6:30 p.m. in Reckling Park. They’ll play two more games this weekend, Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets start at $18.
College Basketball: Houston Cougars vs. Texas Longhorns
At noon on Saturday, the Coogs take on the Longhorns at Fertitta Center in one of the last home games before March Madness. Tickets start at $30.
