Hi, I’m Arielle Higgins. I am eight years old, and I love telling and writing stories. At my school this year, we did this thing called the Habitat Fair. Each class had a different habitat, and ours was the desert. Next, our teacher, Mrs. McAlhany, assigned us each an animal: mine was the bobcat. For the next two months, we learned all we could about our topic at the library and online. Then we made a diorama (so much fun!), a watercolor painting, a presentation, and wrote a book.
I got really into my book writing: I wrote a story of a mother bobcat with her four baby kittens on an adventure in the desert. It has lots of facts from my research, so kids learn while reading a fun adventure. I even spent extra time on the weekends doing all the pictures. It was worth it because a lot of kids in my class loved reading my book.
Then, I wanted to share it with kids all over the world, so I published it. Did this work? Sure did! One kid in Australia even read it and wrote a review on Amazon.
I brought a copy of my published book to school, and my classmates were so impressed. It was a hit! So, what’s the fact kids like most about bobcats? How they got their name: bobcats have a short or “bobbed” tail which is why they're named bob-cats or bobcats.
I was invited to go on television which was a little scary at first but ended up being fun, and it helped kids learn about my book.
My final advice to all kids is that if you have a good story, write it, and get it published, so kids everywhere can enjoy it.
