Happy Friday! This weekend, continue to cheer on Team USA in the 2024 Olympics, dine out for a cause as part of the 2024 Houston Restaurant Weeks, enjoy a classic Shakespeare performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre as part of the Houston Shakespeare Festival, and more.
2024 Olympics
The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris continues through Aug. 11. Watch the Games televised on NBC or stream the Games through Peacock. See NBCOlympics.com, NBC.com, the NBC app, and the Olympics app. Fans who want to tune in to the best Olympics moments across a wide range of sports can check out the new Gold Zone streaming option, which is like the Olympic equivalent of NFL Network’s RedZone.
Cheer on Team USA, including some Houstonians such as Kelsey Bing, goalkeeper for Team USA Field Hockey. Want to watch alongside other fans? The POST is showing the majority of the Olympic games on two transparent 16’ x 10’ LED TV screens suspended from the ceiling.
Houston Shakespeare Festival
The Houston Shakespeare Festival, the professional arm of the University of Houston’s School of Theater and Dance, celebrates its 50th anniversary season this summer with performances of two of the Bard’s most beloved plays: Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Performances take place at Miller Outdoor Theatre through Aug. 10 and are free to attend. This weekend, performances include Romeo & Juliet tonight, 8:15 p.m. with a Bard Talk at 7:45 p.m. and A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Saturday at 8:15 p.m. with a Bard Talk at 7:45 p.m.
Jurassic Plants Fundraiser & Live Music at Evelyn’s Park
This evening, there will be succulents for sale at Evelyn’s Park in their trevilion. Each succulent will be $5 and all proceeds will go to the park to support their free programming. After buying a succulent, you can head over to Betsy’s for live music from the Marmon Boedeker Band. The events are free and go from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Astros vs. Tampa Bay Rays
The Astros will be playing the Tampa Bay Rays at Minute Maid in a 3-game series: Friday, 7:10 p.m., Saturday, 6:15 p.m., Sunday, 1:10 p.m. Tickets start at $22.
Houston Restaurant Weeks 2024
Houston’s most anticipated foodie event, Houston Restaurant Weeks, kicked off yesterday and will run through Labor Day, Sept. 2. HRW has grown to be the largest Restaurant Weeks fundraiser in the US. Benefiting the Houston Food Bank, the event has raised over $21 million dollars since inception. View the list of participating restaurants, along with their 2024 HRW menus, here.
Royal Revelry
This Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Children’s Museum Houston is mixing the beauty of the Renaissance with the magic of fairy tales and princesses. There will be live Disney-inspired princesses, live Renaissance music, workshops to craft royal jewelry, Dungeons & Dragons game sessions, and swordplay demonstrations. Tickets are $19.95 for children and adults.
White Linen Night on 19th Street
Dress in your best white attire and enjoy outdoor vendors, live music, and food trucks on 19th Street. White Linen Night takes place Saturday, 6-10 p.m. Tickets are $10; children 12 and under are free.
Possums & Popsicles
Grab a frozen treat, enjoy a refreshing root beer (or regular beer) from Saint Arnold Brewing Company, and get up close and personal with live wild animals from the Wildlife Center of Texas. Learn about Houston’s amazing urban wildlife – including opossums – and then you’ll go on a guided hike. Dress for the weather and wear walking shoes. This event takes place Saturday, 7-10 p.m., at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, and is for ages 5+. Tickets are $35 for members; $50 for non-members; $20 for kids ages 5-12.
