I have always been interested in aviation, learning about planes, and flying them. That’s why I was excited to discover the Young Eagles program, which gives free Cessna flights to aspiring fliers. I was intrigued since I had never been able to fly on a small plane before. I decided to get on the waitlist. It took a few months, but there was finally a spot at a small airport in Houston, and I signed up.
The day of the flight, I was excited and nervous. What would a small plane flight be like? Is this dangerous? Will I get to fly the plane? I had so many questions. When my mom and I arrived, we looked for the check-in station and found it in a small building next to the runways. I had someone guide me to the designated plane and I met the pilot. He answered all my questions about the parts of the airplane, and before I knew it, I was strapped in and going down the runway.
I can’t begin to describe the incredible sensation of that first takeoff. It was so much more amazing than bigger planes because you could feel the wind in your face and the second at which the plane lifted off the ground into the air. When we got high enough, the pilot let me take control for a few minutes and taught me the basics including up, down, and side to side. I felt as though I was on top of the world, and nothing could stop me.
Sadly, the flight had to end, and we landed 25 minutes later. Afterwards, I received a free course online for learning to fly. I have just finished it and received a coupon for a real flight lesson. I hope to continue my journey as a pilot and reach my goal of receiving a pilot’s license as soon as I can!
