Museum of Fine Arts, Houston invites visitors to celebrate the unveiling of six new temporary sculptures, at its “Myths and Leyendas: Mujeres” festival, including live music, dance performances, art making activities, Lotería, films, and more.
For a fourth year, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston invites visitors to celebrate the unveiling of six new temporary sculptures, at its “Myths and Leyendas: Mujeres” festival to be held on Sunday, November 9. Both the Fall Festival and the Museum are open to the public, with free admission to all galleries and exhibitions, thanks to the generosity of presenting sponsor H-E-B.
The MFAH partnered with ALMAAHH (Advocates of a Latino Museum of Cultural and Visual Arts & Archive Complex in Houston, Harris County) again for the open call and selection of six Houston-based Latinx artists, whom the MFAH commissioned to create the sculptures for the festival. The selected artists are Laura Cano, Angela Corson, Pedro Gutierrez-Zamora, Sandra de la Rosa, Jasmine Zelaya, and trio of artists Victoria Armenta, Salima Bowaniya and Bailey Serrano. They will create sculptures that are inspired by women in myths and legends from across Latin America, connecting with their own cultural heritage. Their works will be on view in the Cullen Sculpture Garden.
Guests will be able to enjoy live music, dance performances, and art making activities inspired by works in the MFAH collection. Guests can also play Lotería, inspired by art on view at the Museum. Film screenings will be provided by Houston Latino Film Festival.
In 2024, about 2,100 people attended the free festival. Every year, the festival celebrates the MFAH commitment to Latin American and Latino art and art of the Indigenous Americas. Visitors to the Museum will experience those works, as well as art from 5,000 years and seven continents.
