Gloria Justen is a versatile violinist, violist and composer who works and plays in solo, chamber, symphonic and electronic settings. Her compositions have been performed by chamber orchestras in Philadelphia and San Francisco, and she has released a CD called “Four-Stringed Voice: music for solo violin.” Justen has also created surround sound collages and pieces for electric violin. Trained as a violinist at the Curtis Institute of Music, she has performed and toured internationally with major symphony orchestras, as well as touring with the Philip Glass Ensemble. She was the Concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia for four seasons and has also contributed to numerous albums by popular artists. Now working full-time on her creative work, Justen performs and composes using traditional instruments and methods side by side with computer audio techniques and electric instruments.

Performing original compositions, including a chamber work premier.

The Fredell Lack Legacy Violin Series at the Moores School of Music, established by its namesake in 2017, honors the legendary violinist by bringing world-class musical artists to the University of Houston Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts for special performances. Lack served as the C. W. Moores Professor of Violin at UH for five decades, inspiring countless students over the years as a teacher, mentor and friend. Many of her former students and mentees are featured as guest artists in the annual series.
