Hedwig Village's Texas Arbor Day Celebration and Tree Giveaway
Hedwig Village is hosting its first Texas Arbor Day community celebration and tree giveaway on Fri., Nov. 3, 10 a.m. with a tree dedication and Informational talk at Hedwig Park. Children will receive their own Lil’ Gardener starter kit. The city will be dedicating the planting of four new Oak trees purchased with a grant from the Garden Club of Houston.
Skip Richter, the new host of the GardenLine radio show on KTRH 740 AM, will be speaking about “Success with Trees: Selection, Planting, & Summer Care”. Skip has a master’s degree in Horticulture from Texas A&M University, and has served as a county horticulturist with Texas AgriLife Extension for 34 years in Montgomery, Travis, Harris, and Brazos County. He has served as the National Gardening Association’s regional horticulturist for the southeastern U.S. and is a contributing editor to Texas Gardener magazine. His “Gardening with Skip” YouTube channel features over 120 brief gardening videos.
The year, Hedwig Village received the “Tree City” designation from the national Arbor Day Foundation, awarded to cities that are committed to maintaining and growing their tree cover. Trees are an important part of the history of Hedwig Village and many local heritage trees pre-date the city’s founding. The Villages area is one of the only remaining locations within the Houston metropolitan area that hosts a prominent tree canopy in a residential area.
