Neighborhood Community Day


The Menil Collection will host its annual Neighborhood Community Day on Sat., April 5, 1–5 p.m. Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cy Twombly Gallery and enjoy a free afternoon of art, music, poetry, and family activities.

Enjoy an afternoon of art, music, poetry, and family activities in celebration of the museum’s vibrant neighborhood and the 30th anniversary of the Cy Twombly Gallery.

Schedule of events: 
1–1:30 p.m.: Spoken word performance by Meta4 Houston and WITS. Menil Lawn. 

1–2 p.m.: Express Children’s Theatre presents “Art Class for Families with Frida Kahlo”. Rothko Chapel. 

1–3:30 p.m.: Typewriter poems by the Inprint Poetry Buskers. Menil Lawn. 

1–4 p.m.: Paper folding workshop with Joan Son. Menil Drawing Institute. 

1:30–2 p.m.: Curator Talk with Michelle White on Cy Twombly. Cy Twombly Gallery. 

2–3 p.m.: Jazz Trio Performance featuring DACAMERA Young Artists. Menil Lawn. 

2–4 p.m.: Cy Twombly drawings on view. Menil Drawing Institute. 

2:30–3 p.m.: Curator Talk with Michelle White on Cy Twombly. Cy Twombly Gallery. 

2:30–3 p.m.: Curator Talk with Kirsten Marples on Cy Twombly drawings. Menil Drawing Institute. 

2:30–3:30 p.m.: Watercolor demonstration. Watercolor Art Society. 

3–4 p.m.: Poetry Workshop: Writers in the Schools (WITS) invites children to participate in a collaborative writing activity. Menil Lawn. 

3–4 p.m.: Drum Circle: Learn the basics of African drumming with Sam Dinkins III, copresented with DACAMERA. Menil Drawing Institute. 

3:30–4 p.m.: Curator Talk with Clare Elliott on Menil Collection History. Main Building. 

3:30–4 p.m.: Curator Talk with Edouard Kopp on Cy Twombly drawings. Menil Drawing Institute. 

4–4:30 p.m.: Conservation Talk with Joy Bloser on Dan Flavin Installation. Dan Flavin Installation at Richmond Hall. 

3:45–5 p.m.: Inprint Prize Winners Reading, featuring brief readings by winners of The University of Houston’s Alexandra L. Rowan Memorial Foundation Writing Competition, followed by short readings by the recipients of the annual Inprint Juried Prizes. Menil Lawn.
