Park Conversations - The Houston Mutiny and Riots: 105 Years Later

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2022 marks the 105th anniversary of the Houston Mutiny and Riots of 1917. This event seeks to update Houstonians on the progress made toward securing clemency for the 24th Regiment soldiers who were convicted without adequate legal representation or the ability to appeal. The event will also provide the context for what took place on August 23, 1917, highlighting why the flight for exonerating these soldiers is underway and who is involved. ***Event venue update: This event will now take place at Buffalo Soldiers National Museum due to anticipated rain.***

As stewards of historic Camp Logan, the former WWI training camp which is today’s Memorial Park, Memorial Park Conservancy along with presenting sponsors the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum,  Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis invite Houstonians to join an important discussion as part of a new event series called Park Conversations.

Commemorating the anniversary of the Camp Logan Mutiny and Houston Riots of 1917, Park Conversations – The Houston Mutiny and Riots: 105 Years Later will focus on the fight to secure clemency for the soldiers who were convicted without adequate representation nor the ability to appeal. This includes soldiers who were subsequently executed.  Progress has been made toward clemency in recent years, and even in recent months. In addition to an excerpt from the documentary Mutiny on the Bayou that explains the August 23, 1917 event, the evening will feature a panel discussion moderated by Khambrel Marshall, member of the KPRC 2 Severe Weather Team and host of "Houston Newsmakers", with speakers including legal experts leading today’s efforts for clemency for these soldiers, descendants of those involved in the 1917 event, and local community leaders.

Park Conversations is an outdoor event. Attendees are encouraged to dress casually for warm weather and bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair. Water and a complimentary snack will be provided, and additional food and refereshments will be available for purchase onsite from various local food trucks. Please note, no glass containers are allowed in the Park.

Additional program partners include Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin (District C), County Precinct Four Commissioner R. Jack Cagle, the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and Uptown Houston.
