Reception for Author Ann Weisgarber

The organizers of Gulf Coast Reads have chosen a book that will be of particular interest to readers of the region. The Promise is set in Galveston before, during and after the 1900 hurricane that devastated the island. The author, Ann Weisgarber, has strong ties to the area, splitting time between homes in Sugarland and Galveston, and the novel’s historical accuracy owes a great deal to her long hours of research at local libraries.

The Bellaire City Library and the Friends of the Bellaire Library will host a reception for the author Oct. 22, 7 p.m. in the Bellaire Civic Center. Ann Weisgarber will talk about her research on The Promise and answer questions. The Friends of the Bellaire Library will have copies of the book available for purchase and invite all to this special event.

Now in its fifth year, Gulf Coast Reads was created by librarians and partner organizations across southeast Texas to encourage the reading and discussion of a selected title each October.  It is meant to raise awareness of public libraries’ crucial role in building stronger, more connected communities and to remind readers just how fun it is to share and talk about a good book. This year, over 30 libraries and library systems, school districts, colleges and partner organizations across southeast Texas are participating in Gulf Coast Reads.

Other Bellaire Library Gulf Coast Reads programs include Arch Andrus, author and local expert of Gulf Coast Cooking, presenting “Typical Coastal Cooking of 1900” Oct. 3; Andrew Coleman of the Galveston Historical Foundation, talking on Oct. 15 about the “Great Storm of 1900” and Doug Weiskopf, train historian will present on Oct. 31, “Trains, Transportation and the Galveston Storm: Before and After”.
