Santa Maria Hostel to Present 'Letter to My Mother'

Letter to My Mother

On Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, author Branislav Jankic and co-film director Monika Jagaciak will present their award winning short documentary based on the book, Letter to My Mother. The event will be held at MATCH at 6:30 p.m.

Branislav Jankic reveals an impactful look into the lives of mothers suffering from addiction. Jankic’s mother was a prescription drug and alcohol addict. He had experienced his own struggles with addiction throughout his teenage years. To re-asses and reconcile his relationship with his mother he brought to the forefront a narrative that is often left hidden to produce a dialogue about motherhood and addiction.

Jankic and his producer reached out to 40 women and their children across the United States who were willing to participate in this project. Eleven were women and their children from Santa Maria Hostel. Jankic’s goal is to raise awareness for addiction as an illness not a weakness, inspiring women and mothers to seek help.

The film will be followed with an audience participation panel discussion and a book signing.

Santa Maria Hostel is one of Texas’ largest multisite residential and outpatient substance use disorder treatment centers for women. The road to recovery can take many different paths and Santa Maria is here to pave the way for women and children.  From recovery from addiction to recovering from homelessness, incarceration, abuse and other trauma, Santa Maria has the experience and compassion to offer a hand up, change lives, and heal families.
