UHD Thursday Night Concert Series

Discovery Green launches the free UHD Thursday Night Concert Series beginning Thursday, April 20th. This is the 11th year UHD and Discovery Green have teamed up to present free concerts for Houston. The series will kick-off with an evening of hip hop, soul music by two-time Grammy nominated band Tank and the Bangas out of New Orleans. The series continues with a variety of genres ranging from Tejano to punk, rap and beyond. Houston-based Wonky Power served as booking agent for the series. 

Schedule: 

April 20, 7 – 9 p.m. – Tank and the Bangas and Sunami Force
Tank and the Bangas comes from New Orleans, Louisiana. The band won the 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Contest and in November 2019, they were nominated in the Best New Artist category for the 2020 Grammy Awards. Opening for them is local reggae group, Sunami Force.

May 4, 7 – 9 p.m. – Kiko Villamizar/The Tiarras and Cucucuy
Kiko Villamizar is an Austin, Texas musician who was born in Miami to Colombian parents and was raised in Medellin. His music is a fusion of Afro-Colombian and Reggae with other Latin world beats thrown in. Sisters turned bandmates, Tori, Sophia, and Tiffany Baltierra, collectively known as The Tiarras, are multi-faceted artists creating global music by pursuing sound without restrictions. Cucucuy is a local Houston band centered around a trio of established local artists - Adrian Graniel and Alan Garza from Tax the Wolf and Handsomebeast’s and Astro Inn’s Jacob Rodriguez – and a sound these veteran musicians haven’t previously explored.

May 11, 7 – 9 p.m. – Kam Franklin and Micah Edwards
Kam Franklin is lead vocalist for local band The Suffers, a local Gulf Coast soul band. She is known for her soulful mezzo- soprano vocals. Micah Edwards is a local musician and singer known as “Mr. Texas Soul.” Micah produces his own sound from a combination of the things he loves.

May 18, 7 – 9 p.m. – Cha Wa and Mind Shrine
Cha Wa is a Mardi Gras Indian funk band from New Orleans, Louisiana, that received Grammy nominations in 2018 and 2021. Joe Gelini, the band’s leader, and drummer founded Cha Wa in 2014. The Mardi Gras Native tribes' slang term "Cha Wa" means "here we come" or "we're comin' for ya." The Houston, Texas-based four-piece band Mind Shrine consists of Brian Gonzalez (guitar/bass), Bradley DeAnda (guitar/bass/vocals), Richie Alejandro (drums) and Jess Howard (lead vocals) and has a distinctive, cross-generational sound that draws heavily from Psych, Jazz, Soul, and various Rock genres.

May 25, 7 – 9 p.m. – Garrett T Capps and Ms Mack & The Daddies
Garrett T Capps is a San Antonio native who makes cowboy kraut with his band NASA Country & also lots of Tex-Mex rock n' roll. His most popular song is “Born in San Antone” Capps' country music has always been quite creative, deliberately pushing country music to its extremes. Austin, Texas-based Ms. Mack & The Daddies are a "class act bringing soul back." They opened for the Grammy award winning music group “Kool and the Gang” in spring 2020.

June 1, 7 – 9 p.m. – Golden Dawn Arkestra and Jumprope
Golden Dawn Arkestra uses sound and movement to conduct extra-dimensional experiments involving space and time travel. Their name and colorful attire reflect a continuation of Sun Ra's cosmic legacy. They continue to convey a message of peace, love, and tolerance in the hopes that one day all living things on Earth will coexist peacefully. The Boston-based indie pop quartet Jumprope was formed in late 1995 by singer/guitarist Ad and his vocalist sister Noelle.
