Lone Star Flight Museum Spring Break Flight Plan
Enjoy a spring break visit to the Lone Star Flight Museum and glide through the story of flight in the Lone Star State. Clear yourself for takeoff in the cockpit of a Curtiss Jenny or P-51 Mustang. Coast through the collection of historic aircraft in two 30,000 sq. ft. hangars. Take flight into Texas aviation history with the Heritage Gallery and Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. The daily flight plan (9 a.m.–5 p.m.) will include flight giveaways on the T-41* (10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., weather permitting), paper airplane design, construction and launch, Knowledge Hunt, and live action simulators in the Aviation Learning Center (additional fee).
Activities include:
March 10-11: Meet the Pilots - Visit with pilots and crew chiefs who maintain and fly the museum's historic aircraft collection. This takes place March 10, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; March 11, 12-3 p.m.
March 12: Mechanic Monday - Learn the nuts and bolts of airplane maintenance from the mechanics and crew chiefs who keep the LSFM fleet airworthy, watch live demonstrations, tour the maintenance shop, and try your hand at turning a screw (or two)! (11 a.m.-2 p.m.)
March 13: Natural Flyers - The same forces that keep planes flying also keep birds soaring. The Houston Audubon Society and their live birds of prey demonstrate how nature inspired aviation pioneers. (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.)
March 14: AV8R Experiments - Scientists knew about the forces of flight long before manned flight was developed. Visit the Museum to conduct your own experiments using simple materials such as balloons, string and even a deck of cards to learn what makes aircraft lift off and stay aloft. (11 a.m. – 2 p.m.)
March 15: Helicopter Day - Meet the pilots of local helicopter rescue operations including Life Flight, the Houston Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard. (11 a.m. – 2 p.m.)
March 16: Pilot Experience – Explore the skies like a real pilot in our Aviation Learning Center. Plan your round-trip flight, “file” an FAA flight plan, and pre-flight a real Mooney M20 Ovation aircraft. Then settle into one of our flight simulators and hit the throttle. FREE one-hour session runs every 30 minutes. (9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
March 17: Drone Demo Day - Drones are everywhere these days….from amateur enthusiasts to professional racers. LSFM partners with MultiGP (a global, professional, drone racing league) and the FAA for a day of live demonstrations, training, and safety tips. (10 a.m-3 p.m.)
