Create, make and give

ODYSSEY Eliza Glover, who’s from River Oaks and now attends St Mary’s Calne in Wiltshire, England, created her own clothing line.

Creativity has always been a big part of my life. I was heavily influenced by my father to break the bounds of the expected and create new ideas. He encouraged me and my sisters, Cate and Samantha, to create without regard to expectations of success or perfection. He coached Odyssey of the Mind teams for all of us during elementary school at Memorial Drive Elementary. Any trial was a good attempt.

This led me to build a strong sense of independence and adventure, eventually leading to St Mary’s Calne, an all-girls boarding school in the English countryside. There, my eyes were opened to the beauty of other cultures and the world of fine art. In England, the value of art education is equal to any other academic pursuit, requiring discipline of the technique and a high level of sophistication.

I began to pursue my love of fashion. I used my painting skills to create custom denim jackets. I was invited to a photo shoot for a co-op of other students in London, spanning photographers, designers, website developers, etc. I happened to be wearing one of my hand-painted jackets, and a streetwear company in London asked me to produce some for their clothing brand. I was commissioned to create a line of 15 denim jackets.

I saw the opportunity to create my own line of streetwear clothing under the trade name “Lonely Socialite.” I originally developed the Lonely Socialite name and trademark as part of an art project about “affluenza.” People seem to really identify with the notion that we sometimes hide our loneliness under a facade.

I also created a collection of 30 pieces for our school charity fashion show for Operation Smile, which provides cleft-palate operations for children in poverty. We raised approximately $7,500 and impacted the lives of about 30 children! In addition, I have provided designs to Sarahuaro’s Center for the Development of Women, a charity in Los Cabos, Mexico, which empowers women, feeds children and provides daycare. Sarahuaro has used my designs to make and sell clothing.

I hope to continue to give back to the community with further endeavors in my field of passion.
