Today, there are so many charities and good causes to get involved with that it can be difficult to decide how to help. Supporting education is one of the best ways to support the local community, and there is a wonderful event coming up right in our backyards.

On Friday, Feb. 1, the Westchase Rotary Club is hosting its 7th annual fundraiser in the form of a soup cook-off. This Rotary Club raises money for scholarships for high school kids going to college. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the Soup’er Bowl go towards scholarships. In the past, scholarships have gone towards students at high school across Houston, including Memorial and Stratford. The Houston Westchase Rotary Club is 35 years old and currently supports 17 local students with four-year, $1,000 awards.

HWRC includes many active community members, including Margaret McBride, Vice President at Cadence Bank on Memorial; Gene Stoffel at Edward Jones; Gary Guilloud, a local veterinarian, Jatin Desai, project manager at Maverick Engineering Company; George Kurisky at Johnson, DeLuca, Kurisky & Gould; and many others working and residing in Buzz areas.

At the Souper Bowl, each sponsor/team cooks a different type of soup for all attendees to try for a small entry fee. Soups from last year include cheeseburger soup, minestrone soup and a seafood bisque. At the end of the event, attendees vote on their favorite soups and the winner will walk away with a trophy.

The event also features tons of great raffle items including restaurant gift cards, Rodeo tickets, Rockets tickets and more! Last year, in addition to the items listed already, there was also a TV and handmade quilts raffled off.
