A visual expression of self

Since I could pick up a pencil, I’ve been sketching and doodling. I love the way paint glides onto a canvas or the dark pigment of pencil on paper. I’ve always been drawn to art, whether pictures and paintings on walls or random sculptures. I love art because of the vast ways I can express myself visually instead of through words. Art is very interpretive and fluid; it can be viewed in many perspectives and can express multiple ideas. 

My parents have enrolled me in every art class imaginable, from watercolor, acrylic and oil paints to paper cutting and ceramics. I loved every single class I took, but I took a particular liking to painting. In 2011, my parents signed me up for a painting class, where I fell in love with the medium. Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to painting with acrylic and oil paints. 

At the start of middle school, I realized I could turn my passion for painting into something more. I started participating in local art competitions, where I got a few ribbons. Then I started submitting my artworks to statewide and nationwide competitions. I won a few Scholastic Silver and Gold Keys, Houston Dog Show Best in Grade in 2017, and a few other events. Recently I received a Committee’s Choice award in the Houston Dog Show for my “Curious Dog” painting. 

Receiving ribbons and awards for my artworks isn’t the reason I love painting. The awards represent my growth as an artist. Looking back at my middle school artworks, I can see my improvement and how far I’ve come. 

Art does not come naturally. I’ve spent multiple hours every week sketching, painting, and fixing the flaws in my work. Through painting, I’ve learned that if you are passionate about something and you’re willing to work hard to accomplish it, you will achieve your goal.
