Emery's Powder Puff Game

Homecoming week at Emery is filled with crazy outfits, pep rallies, and fun sports activities to get school spirits up. One of these activities is the annual Powder Puff game, which is a flag football game between the upperclassmen and underclassmen girls. The Emery Booster Club plans this event and ensures it is a fun and engaging experience for all the students.

Middle school students, high school students, and all school faculty come out to Caress Stadium to watch, cheer, and listen to the student announcers providing entertainment for the audience. Everyone has an opportunity to participate, and jerseys are ordered about a month in advance to get everyone excited for the game. The majority of girls order their jerseys their freshmen year and keep the same one throughout four years. The teams are led by players on the varsity football team who can give a little insight into how the game works and plays that would be beneficial to the team.

This year, the game was extremely close. It started off with an amazing play from the upperclassmen girls where the quarterback, Carolyn Kessler, through a 35-yard pass to the wide receiver who ran it into the end zone, scoring the first touchdown of the game.

“It was so fun playing with my friends and being able to help the upperclassmen win. I can’t wait to play again next year!” says Carolyn after her extremely impressive throw. The ball was then given to the underclassmen. Luckily, in the fourth down they had a successful play where the ball was run down the field, earning the first few points for their team. The game continued with incredible catches, varsity-level throws, and some aggressive defense leaving the game tied with about 30 seconds left. Finally, the upperclassmen girls pulled through and scored a touchdown, breaking the tie and winning the game. Overall, it was a fun and exciting match that made the student body ready for homecoming on the upcoming Saturday.
