Carnegie's College Career Day
College Career Day spanned a vast number of career topics. Here, students listen to a presentation by Dr. Wesley Long, Professor of Microbiology at Academic Institute Houston Methodist, about recent research into antibiotics and antiviral medicines and of his job as a academic reseacher and professor.
On any other Wednesday, the halls of Carnegie would be quiet, as students head into their homerooms and study for their next class. On Feb. 12, however, the school was abuzz with a new excitement.
This year, Carnegie hosted its first College Career Day, an opportunity for lowerclassmen to engage with professionals and experts in various fields, and discover their true interests.
Occurring over the course of two hours, students attended seminars held by professors and professionals over various fields. Topics covered everything from in-home lawyers to military recruits. It was clear that each student exited every seminar with a clearer idea of who they are.
“[Before] I never considered entering West Point...but no student loan debt sounds like something I’m interested in,” sophomore Nicolas Lopez said, “I might just apply.”
Professor of Engineering at Rice University, Daniel Cohan, articulated the importance of this career day. “It’s important that students at your age [freshmen/sophomores] go into the expert field knowing what they are going into. Time becomes more important when you get older. [As a
teacher], maybe I decide to have a coffee break here and there. Other fields, you need to follow a schedule...and that’s something important to know [when you choose a job].”
On top of Career options, students also had the opportunity to learn about college applications from an array of Universities. The list of college recruiters spanned from West Point Academy to Trinity College. Pictured here is a popular seminar presented by an admissions counselor from the University of Houston.
Counselors at Carnegie are constantly pushing for students to think ahead. “When you think about it, it makes sense,” sophomore Sonya Keswani said, “next year [I] will be applying for college, so I need to start thinking about what I’m applying to, now.”
As a top-rank high school, Carnegie’s administration continues to push for more college exposure for its students. Realizing the importance of educating students of various career and college opportunities, Carnegie looks forward to continuing this event, because as a high school
of a high reputation, they want to prepare their students for their future and ensure that they enter life with a clearer idea of where they want to be in the future. Although this year was its first College Career Day, there’s sure to be more to come.
