In honor of the International Day of Peace, Sept. 21, Holocaust Museum Houston hosted a virtual event called "Let Freedom Ring." Trish Morille and Lisa Sheinbaum co-chaired the event, which also celebrated the new HMH exhibition, Mandela: Struggle for Freedom. The event featured Houstonian Linda Lorelle, an Emmy award-winning broadcast journalist, in conversation with Earlie Hudnall Jr., photographer and Texas Southern University professor. The conversation was bookended by poetry written and performed by HISD students – Madison Petaway, Houston's 2020 Youth Poet Laureate, a junior at Westbury High School, and Helen Shibru, a junior at Jane Long Academy – telling struggles of the racial divide. Pictured (from left) are friends Trish Morille, Lisa Sheinbaum and Gisela Cherches, who watched the virtual event together. The Mandela exhibit, open through Jan. 3, explores the fight for human rights and justice in South Africa during the time of apartheid.
