Richard Jackson, who is being treated for a rare type of pancreatic cancer, decided to devote his energy toward funding a library in Africa. He shared details with friends and family through the CaringBridge site. Richard says the meaningful project has given him joy and helped his mental state through a challenging time. Previously, Richard founded a nonprofit called the Mali Nieta Foundation that helps with education and healthcare in Africa and South America. He connected with Donna Gunn, who created Africa’s Promise Village to care for Maasai children in an area that has no electricity or resources such as restroom facilities. Currently, the school educates about 300 kids, and she wants to expand to 1,000 students, with a high school and library with computers. Richard is working with Donna to help achieve this goal, including satellite internet service and solar power, plus a covered story pit in front of the library. “Education is the way to help people,” said Richard, a physician for more than four decades. “I’m very excited about it.” To donate funds or gently used children’s books meaningful to African children, see www.malinieta.org.
