Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to This Weekend

Happy Friday! Whether you’re looking forward to the Super Bowl, Puppy Bowl, or Valentine’s Day, it’s a fun weekend ahead. Here’s what’s happening:

Spring Branch FFA Show & Sale
The Spring Branch Future Farmers of America kicked off their 44th Annual Show & Sale Thursday. It continues Friday at 3:30 p.m. with goat, lamb, and swine shows. Sale Day is on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. with a buyer registration and silent auction, followed by lunch, opening ceremonies, and the live auction at 1 p.m.

Mosaic Music Lounge at Discovery Green
If you haven’t seen the Mosaic of Light by artist collective HYBYCOZO, the current art installation at Discovery Green, be sure to check it out before Feb. 27! The installation includes sculptures that present changing light and shadows that transform as the day passes, plus two pieces designed with imagery from Houstonians’ answers to the question: What shapes evoke Houston? This Friday, from 6-9 p.m. on the Hess Patio Deck, see the sculptures at the Mosaic Music Lounge sponsored by PNC Bank overlooking the Mosaic of Light. DJ Sun curates the roster of featured DJs, and creative cocktails are available for purchase.

Valentine’s Weekend: Romantic French Masterworks
The Houston Symphony is offering a romantic selection of French masterworks on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. at Jones Hall for the Performing Arts. The concert is anchored by the music of the Boulanger sisters and led by renowned French conductor Fabien Gabel. Pianist Alexandra Dariescu gives the U.S. premiere of Boulanger’s Fantaisie Variée for Piano and Orchestra. Then, star vocalists join the orchestra for Lili Boulanger’s Scenes from Faust et Hélène. Plus, Dariescu performs the music of César Franck, and the orchestra gives the Houston premiere of a long-lost score by Stravinsky. This event also has a Valentine’s Date Night Special: you’ll see an option to add chocolate to your order when buying tickets online. Tickets range from $26-114.

Witness: African Americans & The Lands of Southeast Texas at the Houston Botanic Garden
Join local experts in history, environmental justice, and agriculture to explore the connections between Houston's dynamic African American community and the Land on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in celebration of Black History Month This experience at the Houston Botanic Garden includes an expert panel, interactive walk, and hands-on ideas gallery, and is part one of the Witness Series. Non-member fee of $15 includes general admission to the Garden. Members receive a $10 discount.

The Market at Sawyer Yards
Explore the Market at Sawyer Yards, an outdoor makers’ market, this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This curated market hosts a mix of artist mediums with a focus on folk art, “maker is the seller,” and artisan crafts, including packaged specialty foods. In addition to browsing the wares of artists, artisans, and other vendors, market-goers can also dig into food from a popular Houston food truck and enjoy free live music. This market day coincides with 2nd Saturday Open Studios, when Sawyer Yards invites the public to tour more than 350 open art studios.

The Puppy Bowl XVIII
The Puppy Bowl starts at 1 p.m. with a fierce matchup: Team Ruff vs. Team Fluff. The 118 adorable puppies chasing each other for a chance to win the “Lombarky Trophy” includes the Houston Texans own pup, Kirby, a male Labrador retriever. A service-dog-in-training, Kirby joined the Texans last July at 10 weeks old.

Kirby is training to be a service dog in a partnership with America’s VetDogs. Once his training is complete, he’ll be placed with a veteran or a first responder with disabilities. As part of his socialization, the Texans, in partnership with Kroger, have hosted Kirby at home games and community events.

The Puppy Bowl will be hosted by the dynamic duo of Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg. How to watch: If you have cable, you can watch it on Animal Planet. Or you can stream it on Discovery +, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live, or fuboTV.

Puppy Bowl at Axelrad
Axelrad is showing the Puppy Bowl starting at 1 p.m. this Sunday, in collaboration with Caitie’s Foster Fam Rescue & Rescued Pets Movement. There will be adoptable puppies, puppy ice cream, and their weekly Vegan Sunday Market from 2-7 p.m.

Super Bowl
The Big Game - the Los Angeles Rams vs. the Cincinnati Bengals - kicks off at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. The halftime show will feature Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar.
