Hello, my name is Zacharia Ali Mir. I am a seventh grader at Presbyterian School. My interest in poetry began in fifth grade, when my teacher gave me a website to use, which would improve my poetry. I practiced my poetry online, especially when quarantine started. Most of the time, I would make poetry on problems happening in the world.
Quarantine was a terrible time, so what I would do when I was bored is write poems and send them to my fifth-grade teacher. I would read the poetry to myself every time I was stressed out from staying at home too much. When I wrote poetry, it was like I was in the story itself, experiencing things that I liked to do before Covid. From now and forever, I will keep on writing poetry especially when I am not feeling well because poetry is like meditation for me.
Houston
Houston
The modern city where I lived
Happy and content
For seven years
The bustling smelly city
Where I rest relaxed on my leather couch
In my magical house
Thousands of diverse cars and trucks
Speeding along the cracked bumpy highway
Called I-610
In Houston I smell horrible gas
And immense factories
I hear diverse people
Cheering loudly for
The baseball team called the Astros
I see
Dinosaur-sized black and gray
Looming towers
Forming incredibly beautiful Downtown Houston
In this tragic Coronavirus Pandemic
I am happily writing this exhilarating poem
So I can vividly remember thriving Houston during Covid-19
Eid
People going to the mosque to do their prayers
I smell the scent of dates, sitting on the counter
children saying thank you to their parents when they give them money
I taste the chocolate being savored in my mouth
I touch the money that my grandparents gave me
Eid
