Making music together

The Emery/Weiner School (EWS) and Shearn Elementary School are neighbors on Stella Link Road, and now they share an after-school music program. Kelly Dean, upper- and middle-school music teacher at EWS, introduced the new program this school year to share the love of music with younger students. Dean and EWS student volunteers go down the street to Shearn twice each week to teach lessons in guitar, bass, piano, and drums. Dean’s former saxophone student, Matt Mullenweg, graciously donated instruments to Shearn’s PTO, allowing 13 fifth-grade students to participate. The goal is for each Shearn student who participates to reach Level I certification on all instruments in the music curriculum.
