Saving the blue-throated macaws

Five years after the dedication of the Laney Rickman Blue-throated Macaw Reserve in Bolivia, Dorothy Paterson (pictured) visited the site named for her late sister. Along with her husband Malcolm, daughter Audrey, and friend Terry Huffington, Dorothy made the trip to the Beni Savannas of Bolivia, the only place where the critically endangered Blue-throated macaws live in the wild. They held a memorial ceremony and spread the ashes of Laney and her husband, Jack, on the reserve while a pair of the beloved blue birds happened to fly overhead. Laney, who passed away unexpectedly during Hurricane Harvey, was an advocate for aviculture and conservation, and founded the Bird Endowment. Dorothy has assumed the role of president and executive director of the Bird Endowment and continues Laney’s legacy with efforts to save the Blue-throated macaw from extinction.
