Lamar Back to School Guide
The 2014-2015 school year has begun. Here is everything you need to know about Lamar’s upcoming school year.
•Goodbye Redskins and hello Texans. Due to the insensitivity of the name “Redskins,” we are now the “Texans.” Look forward to new school spirit gear and team uniforms. Also be on the lookout for subtle changes around the school where previous logos and references have been replaced.
•This is the first school year where all grades will take STAAR tests instead of TAKS. No more confusion due to every grade having a different regiment of tests.•This year’s football will be exciting. Look for a deep playoff run. We have two new transfers: J.W. Ketchum and Tyreik Gray, a quarterback and running back respectively. These two new offensive weapons join an already powerful football team with multiple players likely to attend Division 1 schools. Lamar lost in the 5A Division 1 state championship in 2012 against Allen High School and is looking for revenge. Allen will likely to make it back to the state championship on the back of its star quarterback and Texas A&M commit, Kyler Murray, and other top college recruits.
•This is the last year before construction on the school begins so say your last goodbyes to your favorite parts of the old school. Except the front, which will remain standing because of its historical importance.
•Chick-Fil-A prices will increase to $5.00 for chips and a sandwich due to Chick-Fil-A’s raise in price. Don’t stop buying because the money raised goes towards the seniors' after-prom party.
•There are many new teachers coming in, seemingly more than normal, so be aware that you will probably have some teachers who are new to Lamar.
•Incoming seniors: College applications have already been released so you need to start filling them out. Also, if you’re planning on taking another standardized test, you need to take it ASAP because applications are normally due sometime in December or January.
•Incoming juniors: NHS begins immediately. If you were accepted into NHS last school year you need to check your email. They have already sent some volunteer opportunities. It’s not urgent that you get your hours in, but it will be easier to make time for volunteering before everything gears up.
These are just a few things to look forward to in this exciting new school year. Good luck to all students and teachers to make this another successful year.
