Lagenia Clark, Christine Dodson, Jennifer Draper and Monique Boling

Lagenia Clark, Christine Dodson, Jennifer Draper and Monique Boling (pictured, from left) started training and racing together several years ago through the Heart Zones Women’s Tri Training group. None of them knew that they’d all get hooked on the experience and that they would ultimately participate in the Steamboat Lake Sprint Triathlon this summer. They chose this race because Monique recently built a home with her husband Mark Boling in Steamboat. Although their training in Houston’s flat lands didn’t prepare them for the challenge of racing at an altitude, Jennifer placed second and Lagenia placed third in their race category. “I never thought I would welcome the heat and humidity of Houston,” Lagenia said, “but training and racing at sea level is definitely easier than racing at the top of a mountain!” Jennifer compared the experience to being “sort of like childbirth” because it’s painful and exhausting, but she’s ready to go through it all again next year. Monique said that although it was tough, it was a beautiful venue and they had a great time. The best part of doing triathlons, said Christine, are the friendships she’s made through racing. They’re already plotting their next destination race, but it likely won’t be anywhere with altitude.
