HISD's Newest Student Government

More than 80 students attended the Student Congress’ opening meeting.

This year, HISD created the Student Congress program, founded by over 30 students from eight different high schools across the district, in order to establish a connection between HISD’s administration and students. The Student Congress is a self-proclaimed “organization run by students, for students,” and so far are certainly deserving of the title.

Thomas Nguyen, a junior at Carnegie and a founding member of the Congress, says that he is so proud of how far they have come. He has “seen it grow from 10 people in a room bouncing ideas off of each other” to a current but rapidly growing membership of more than 80 students from 26 different high school across the district. He remembers when it was only the 10 of them and finds it remarkable how far they have come, now having “backing from officials and weight in political issues.”

For all of those high schoolers reading this, the best has yet to come. HISD’s Student Congress is actively seeking members to join their organization. Applicants can apply to one of five different committees: Outreach, Finance, Advocacy, Governance, and Agenda. If any HISD high schooler is interested in having a say in the school district’s policies or want the professional experience under their belt, I strongly recommend they visit the Student Congress’ website to learn more about the organization.
