Gingerbread Boys

From Houston Junior League Cookbook

Ingredients: 

½ cup shortening
⅔ cup sugar
⅔ cup molasses
1 egg
3½ cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
Currants or raisins (optional)

Recipe directions: 

Cream shortening and sugar; blend in molasses and egg. Combine flour, soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves; sift into molasses mixture. Mix dough until smooth. (Dough will be stiff.) Chill dough before rolling. Roll out dough ⅛ - to ¼-inch thick on lightly floured board. Cut with floured gingerbread boy cutter. Carefully place cut-out boys on lightly greased baking sheet. If desired, press currants or raisins into dough to make face and buttons. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. Cool on wire rack. Makes 30 small cookies.
