Killen’s Burgers

One of the most anticipated burger openings in the Houston area this year has been that of Killen’s Burgers in Pearland. From Killen’s Steakhouse and Killen’s Barbecue, Ronnie Killen took the next logical step with his classic burger offerings. In a retro ’50s diner setting of black, white, turquoise and red, patrons queue up to place their order at the counter, and then proceed to a table and wait for their name to be called. Everything is made from scratch, including the burgers of Angus beef. Cooked on chrome-plated grilling surfaces, the heat is kept in, which results in a crunchy-on-the-outside, moist-on-the-inside patty, served on a fluffy bakery bun that is toasted. Killen’s tasty special sauce is similar to Thousand Island dressing. Toppings include jalapeño, avocado and mushrooms. Other options include chicken and hot dogs. For the truly hungry, try the #99 (named for popular Houston Texans football player J.J. Watt), two 10-ounce patties, Nueske’s bacon and Wisconsin cheddar cheese. There are ample lines most days, so expect a 20- to 30-minute wait, but enjoy free local craft beer and water while you are in line.
