Nathan Fairbanks-Sherrill, pictured here in a 1941 photo, was one of several local veterans profiled in this story.
Again, we say, The Buzz Magazines is 10 years old!
To celebrate, folks are letting us know about their favorite Buzz stories or photos from over the years – to give the rest of us a chance to check them out again, or for the first time if we missed them.
Here’s our second glance into the rear-view mirror, from writer Dave Schafer:
"I’d say my favorite story so far was Veterans Reunited (November 2010). I’m a bit of a sap, so when the story I’m working on means something to my sources, it tends to mean more to me. And this story was important to my sources. They bared their souls and relived the good ol’ days. I remember Nathan Fairbanks-Sherrill, 91, in response to my question, “What did you do at these reunions?” said, “Well, I don’t actually remember. But I remember we had a hell of a time.” As was mentioned in the Letters to the Editor in the January (2012) Buzz, being profiled in the magazine was a source of pride to Fairbanks-Sherrill. He died in November, so it was nice to give him those last few of his 15 minutes of fame. The others in that story had equally significant input, talking about why they joined and how the military changed them and the bonds that were formed – bonds that I don’t think those of us who didn’t serve in the military could ever really comprehend. So I was glad to at least shine a light on them, and on how those bonds never break, even when they’ve been stretched apart for 60 years."
