Publisher's Note - April 2014

You know how some adults, myself included, complain that our kids are too coddled and entitled? Well, not the girls in this month’s cover story. The morning of our scheduled field-hockey photo shoot last month was a bone-chilling 10 degrees with the wind chill. It was so cold our photographer’s cables were frozen stiff. We considered calling it off, but these 10 young ladies dressed in their uniforms of shorts and short-sleeved shirts wouldn’t hear of it. I was wearing a down ski jacket, hat and gloves! They all huddled in a heated bathroom about 20 yards from the field until it was time to be photographed. When called, each would run out, and in less than 30 seconds, photographer Kevin Long would grab a shot. I didn’t hear a single complaint. Did they pull it off? I think so.
