Jefferson Trammel, a fifth grader at Bunker Hill Elementary, shaved off his hair to raise money for cancer research. He inspired church friend Nelda Ivey to join in too.
I had my head shaved to raise money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which raises money for pediatric-cancer research. My friend’s mom, Mrs. Christyn Whitney, organized all of us to go to our school one night, and people from St. Baldrick’s were there to shave our heads. Some of my friends did this last year, and my friend Mason Whitney has done this for a few years. This was my first time.
I was excited because I wanted to do this with my friends but nervous because I had never shaved my head before. I did not know what to expect. That night I was a little scared to get up there because so many people were there watching and because I really like my hair. But it was really fun; lots of my friends were there, and lots of people were there to take pictures and watch. There was also someone doing face painting, and we had cookies. My mom sent an email to some of our family and people from our church to tell them about shaving my head. A lady from our church named Mrs. Nelda Ivey got the email and decided to have her head shaved too. We did not know she was going to be there, so it was a big surprise. Because she shaved her head, two other women shaved their heads too. I was happy that we raised so much money. I thought it would be hard and that I would only raise about $100 but everyone we asked gave us money and I raised over $1,100.
Everyone there helped raise money; that night we all raised over $17,000. I would love to do this every year, and I hope more people shave their heads so we can raise more money for St. Baldrick’s. I will try to get more people to come shave their heads and raise money. Maybe they will find a cure.
