Blooming and blossoming
The gardens at Pin Oak Middle School continue to bloom and impress the community and the city. The garden surrounds POMS’ amphitheater and has attracted butterflies and hummingbirds. The students completed the majority of the planting themselves. Their hard work paid off, as they received the Keep Houston Beautiful’s Mayor’s Proud Partner Award. The students have planted native-wildflower seeds in addition to the perennials. The garden includes two wheelchair-accessible beds as well as 10 espaliered fruit trees, which were both Eagle Scout projects. Next up will be airponics (planting without soil) for students to grow salads and veggies to enjoy in the cafeteria. Pictured is Gerry Mullins helping in the garden.
