Recycling at Briargrove
Briargrove Elementary School recently participated in the second Annual Green Apple Day of Service, hosting two days focusing on service. The first day gave students and teachers the opportunity to clean up the school, conserving energy, reducing waste and recycling. The second day of service took place on a Saturday, so parents were invited to join their kids to help out. More than 150 families, teachers, staff and members of the community joined to improve the school’s butterfly and edible gardens, orchards, outdoor classrooms and outdoor play- and sports-areas. An Eco-Fair also took place at the school, showcasing the community’s work in building a sustainable city. On this same day, Houston ISD kicked off its Recycling Education Initiative. The city’s recycling mascot ReUse It and Keep Houston Beautiful’s Lucky the Lady Bug, plus one of Houston’s new, festive recycling trucks, added to the atmosphere. Briargrove students showcased artwork selected by HISD to be part of the district-wide recycling education initiative. Pictured are (from left) students Naima Rodriguez and Leya Obid showing off their newly pulled carrots while other Briargrove Elementary School families work on the school’s edible gardens.
