Memorial Men's Basketball 2014-15 Season Poster
While most students were out relaxing for their entire two-week break this holiday season, the Memorial Men’s Varsity Basketball team practiced for countless hours, preparing for their tournament in Dallas where they earned seventh place. For all home games and even some away games, the Swearing Sailors, the team’s biggest supporters, can always be spotted in the stands cheering them on.
Starters include three-year-lettermen seniors Blake Berry, Jayce Gates, and Brian Lake, whose positions are point guard, center, and shooting guard, respectively. When asked what their favorite game was this year, they all agreed on the game against Stratford at Don Coleman Coliseum due to the number of Mustangs cheering in the crowd and the victory of 70 to 57.
Many sports teams follow certain traditions but the boys keep it simple by going out to eat together after games and attending a few planned team dinners throughout the season. The players frequently visit spots like Buffalo Wild Wings, Subway, and Southwell’s before and after games.
The boys’ basketball season began around November and will continue until February. Although none of the players plan on extending their basketball careers in college, Blake, Jayce, and Brian all admit that they will greatly miss being a part of this team but are ready for the next chapter of their lives at their respective colleges. Make sure to come cheer them on this Friday as they play against Northbrook at the Don Coleman Coliseum at 7 p.m.!
