Valentine’s Day is a favorite holiday among many—not just for significant others but also to buy your friends sweet gifts and tell them you appreciate them. There are several different legends about the origin of Valentine’s Day, but my personal favorite was about St. Valentine. It was the story of St. Valentine who was a prosecuted Christian and got thrown into jail. During his time in jail, children visited and brought him cards and roses—supposedly where the tradition came from.
Westbury Christian School has several Valentine’s Day traditions throughout the school and among the students themselves. One of the main traditions at WCS is one where students can buy various assortments of treats ranging from balloons to candy baskets and cards. The treats that they buy are then handed out on Valentine’s Day. The tradition is a lot of fun and students get the chance to eat candy throughout the entire day.
There are also traditions amongst friends. My best friend Mary Matic and I have known each other since freshman year of high school. We started our tradition of that year when we bought gifts for each other to show our appreciation for one another as friends. Valentine’s Day to us signifies friendship and love for friends and family.
Do you have any Valentine’s Day traditions? Happy Valentine’s Day!
