Duchesne Academy Field Day 2015
Duchesne’s annual upper school field day was quite literally “super.” In accordance to the superhero theme, blue and gold capes and other miscellaneous superhero attire occupied the theater as the excited contestants from opposing teams gathered for the opening ceremonies of the highly anticipated day.
Senior blue team rep Kennedy Johnson and gold team rep Christian Willburn kicked off the festivities by explaining the activities that had been prepared for the day and then introduced a blue vs. gold dance-off. Students and faculty looked on as five students from each grade took the stage to represent their class and strut their stuff to an array of upbeat throwback songs. The dance-off proved hilarious as vivacious freshmen and ordinarily poised seniors popped, locked and even flipped about the stage in hopes of impressing the teachers turned judges and earning a point for their team.
Following the upper school dance-off, each grade departed for their first of four community-enriching activities for the day: hoola-hoop hot potato, kickball, human bowling, or dodge-ball.
All grades congregated in the dining hall midday for a carnival-esque snack of soft pretzels and juice to refuel for the infamous blue vs. gold obstacle course. The course began with a full body submersion in a tub of ice water followed by the tedious task of buttoning a men’s dress shirt- simple in theory, but challenging in execution when you’re sopping wet in 50 degree weather. Contestants then took on a range of obstacles from sack races to hurdles, and finished off the race by sitting on and popping a balloon.
The fun-filled day came to a close with the final blue vs. gold faceoff: tug of war. Each grade gave it their all, fueled by the crowd’s wild cheers and the raging fires of competition inside every true Duchenian.
Though both the blue and gold teams gave a “heroic” effort, the blue team proved stronger overall and claimed the title of the 2015 Duchesne Academy field day champions.
