Before Jane Dembski, former director of Bellaire Parks and Recreation, retired, she nominated the Bellaire parks system, programs and facilities for the Gold Medal Award of the Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS). This is the highest honor a parks department can receive. She was excited to hear that Bellaire won the award. An awards ceremony took place in Abilene during the state conference. The criteria to win this award are demanding, so it is a great achievement. It covers the last three years (2012-2014). Dembski compared the awards to “the Academy Awards for Parks and Recreation.” Among those attending were Kevin Browne, recreation supervisor; Ryan Smith, athletics and youth programs superintendent; Brandon Thigpin, facilities superintendent; Karl Miller, current director of parks, recreation and facilities; and Jim Browne, TRAPS president and director of parks and recreation for Sugar Land.
