Events Roundup: Volunteer opportunities this weekend
Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the families and neighborhoods affected by the devastating storm. We’ve seen many community members band together and support their neighbors this week. In that spirit of service, we are dedicating our weekly events post today to highlighting community-related events, gatherings, and efforts to help families in need. Below are some opportunities we’ve heard about so far; please comment below with additional ways to volunteer, donate or receive help from the community:
Godwin Park: Today, a group of Buzz residents part of the Moms and Ladies of Westbury, Meyerland, Bellaire, West U and Rice Village Facebook group, got together at Godwin Park to help get items together to help flood victims and they will be meeting again tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Westbury Baptist Church: Teams are ready to help with laundry, meals, labor and supplies. Contact Bonnie Bibeau, 713-303-2324, for details.
Jewish Federation of Greater Houston: Accepting donations here. They’re also recruiting volunteers who can assist with physical labor at [email protected]. They’re collecting: gift cards for $50, $100, $200 or $500 good at groceries, pharmacies, big box stores like Target, Walmart, Lowes or Home Depot. Drop off at Jewish Family Service at 4131 S. Braeswood Blvd., M-Th, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., F, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The following items are needed: bottled water, work gloves, plastic storage bins, heavy trash bags, heavy duty razor blades to rip out carpet, cleaning supplies including old towels. Westbury Church of Christ: They will be organizing a Saturday morning service project to make sack lunches for all those neighborhoods in need after the flooding. If anyone is interested in coming up and helping make, bag, and deliver lunches please call 713-729-7880 or just show up. Project begins at 9 a.m. at 10424 Hillcroft.
Fundraiser to provide families with donations for hot meals: Facebook page set up by Nicole Kohn, a member of Moms and Ladies of Westbury, Meyerland, Bellaire, West U and Rice Village.
Houston Food Bank: Needs food, donations and help.
Westbury United Methodist Church: Meet at church starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday to coordinate efforts, receive donations, and more. They are looking for: moving boxes, packing paper, packing tape, lawnmowers (to borrow), Clorox, mops and buckets, gloves, masks, paper towels, Purell, bug spray, antibacterial wipes, bottled water, Gatorade, protein bars or individually wrapped snacks, monetary donations are welcome and will be put directly to use for flood victims’ needs. 5200 Willowbend Blvd., Houston, TX 77096
