Megan Doan, a soon-to-be senior at Bellaire High School, took one final vacation before school with her mother’s family. It was a fun bonding experience and they even made custom shirts for everyone in the family! The matching shirts were bright orange and had everyone’s names on the back. The shirts were a good idea to commemorate their vacation, allowed for great coordinated pictures and prevented anyone in the group from getting lost.
“It took a lot of planning between the entire family because we couldn’t agree on the font or the color but it all worked out in the end,” Megan remarked, reflecting over the shirts and preparation for the trip.

On a weeklong trip to Costa Rica, she got to explore exotic locations and wonderful beaches. Her family traveled to the west coast in Guanacaste – specifically, to La Cruz. La Cruz provides the unique opportunity to see across the border into Nicaragua! The trip consisted of many exciting outside activities like relaxing in natural hot springs, taking mud baths, and deep sea fishing. They also enjoyed shopping for native pieces in local souvenir shops.
“We went on an excursion for one day where we went horseback riding up the mountain and then zip lining back down,” said Megan. She documented her family vacation on her GoPro, taking unique underwater videos and pictures of all their activities.

Megan has been taking Spanish for five years, but outside of school she doesn’t get much practice. Costa Rica, a Spanish-speaking country, was the perfect opportunity for her to try out her skills. Although she was hesitant, her family persuaded her to speak Spanish with the locals and she soon became comfortable making conversation with them and asking questions. As the resort had a wide variety of tasty meats and delicious fruits, the most popular topic of conversation was often food: how else to ask for more?
Megan will be continuing Spanish this coming school year.
