Purim is a Jewish holiday in which we celebrate surviving the evil Haman. Haman wanted to kill the Jews and decided on the date to kill them by rolling dice (in Hebrew the word for dice is “Pur,” hence Purim). His plan was foiled by Queen Esther and Mordechai. Every year on Purim, Jews all around the world dress up in costumes and celebrate by having big meals, giving gift baskets, giving charity, and hearing the story read.
At Robert M. Beren Academy, we celebrate the whole week leading up to Purim. Each day is a different dress-up day. This year, Monday was super hero day, Tuesday was TV Show/Movie day, Wednesday was favorite person from the Bible day and Thursday, Purim, was any costume.

When I walked into school on Monday, I saw that the whole lobby had been decorated. It was made to look like a castle out of the story of Purim. There is happiness in the air around Purim time, which can be seen by everyone’s excited faces and giant smiles.
Noah Diner, an eighth grader, says, “I love the fun environment during Purim time and that I can connect to a very old story in a fun and modern way.”
Happy Purim!
