Getting into the Swing of Memorial Sports
As Memorial gets back into the swing of school, its many sports team gear up to take on a new District. Memorial moved from District 19-6A Region 3 to District 15-6A Region 2 for the 2016-2017 school year. This change is met with mostly positive and excited responses for the fall sports seasons.
The Memorial High School Football Team had its first season game against previous district rival Seven Lakes on Aug. 25. When asked about this district change Coach Koch, head football coach and athletic director at Memorial said, “It will be a very challenging district over the years the program in the new 15-6A have established themselves as consistently competitive if not dominant. We will have to be prepared to play at a very high level every week to be competitive." The football team has been working hard all summer to be prepared for this coming season. Time will tell if that practice has proved itself.
The Memorial High School Cross Country Team had its first official meet on Aug 19 the Gulf Coast Meet at Spring Creek Park. Coach Bevan, head of girls Cross Country and Track, commented on the new district, "I am excited about new district with Klein schools. I previously coached at Klein Collins so I am familiar with coaches and running programs. Although I respect them, I think our boys can win district and our girls can get in top 3. We will rise to this challenge." Sounds like it is going to be a challenging yet exciting season for the Cross Country athletes. Bevan agrees, stating, "I am super excited about this years team. Our boys team is loaded and our girls team is getting better every day. More importantly, they are selfless and embody the 'Mustang Way!' We may struggle early but come district we will be on all cylinders!"
One of the exciting things about being in this new District is that Memorial is back in competition with long time rivals Stratford.
Although there are several obstacles to overcome when facing this new district, the Football, Cross Country as well as all fall, winter and spring sports are determined to overcome them and prove their worth. Come out and support Memorial teams this fall!
