Friday was a day like no other at Emery. While the freshmen, sophomores and juniors left for their grade level retreats on Friday, the senior class spent the day going over college application tips, the college admissions process and had time to work on college applications.
This annual tradition allows Emery’s college counselors to spend time with the senior class, going over all of the details when it comes to applying for college, along with participating in a unique case study presented by Gail Roberson, the Associate Director Admissions at Trinity University in San Antonio. She simulated what it’s like to be a college admissions officer faced with making the difficult decision of whether to accept, defer, waitlist or deny an applicant.
After reviewing all of the details of applying for college, the entire grade spent around three hours getting the opportunity to work on college applications, ask questions and review applications with any of Emery’s three college counselors. Dr. Christopher Teel, Director of College Counseling, David Rappaport, Associate Director of College Counseling and Kate Bolen-Lourie, Assistant Director of College Counseling, spent time helping out any students who had questions specific to certain schools or in general.
Students interested in learning more about the University of Miami got an opportunity to meet with the regional school representative. Many students enjoyed the opportunity to take time away from their routine school day and solely work on their college applications.
Senior Kate Kushner said, “It forced me to sit down and work on my essays, something that many seniors put off until the last minute.”
With many students beginning to apply for college in mid-September, this time in late August was the perfect opportunity to finalize resumes and work on essays.
