Three Episcopal High School students worked around Houston this summer to get introduced to different fields and to get job experience.
Junior Bella Florescu worked at Bires Schaffer & Deborde. She chose this law firm because they had an internship available in the summer and she is possibly interested in having a career in law. At the firm, Bella directed incoming phone calls, created expense spreadsheets, scanned and organized case files, and went to court. Her favorite part of the job was going to court and witnessing all the cases being presented, and seeing a little how the judicial system worked. Bella said she “learned more about how the legal system worked and all of the aspects of court.”
Bronwyn Walsh, a junior at Episcopal, worked with MD Anderson’s Teen Volunteer Program. Bronwyn chose this job because “my dad currently works here at MD Anderson, my mom is a cancer survivor, and I am interested in going into medicine”. Bronwyn was assigned four jobs, which involved helping out in the MRI clinic, managing the coffee cart, working at the aquarium gift shop, and directing and walking with visitors to their clinic. She liked working the coffee cart because it always felt good interacting with the patients and putting smiles on their faces. Bronwyn learned that there are so many different people and things that go into making a hospital work and run properly. This opportunity gave her a better understanding of what happens when you have cancer and how it not only affects the patient, but their family and friends.
Mollie Hanna, also a junior at EHS, worked at a bail bonds company, Burns Bail Bonds. She worked here over the summer because it is a family tradition and her older brothers had done the same thing. While there, she organized and sorted the files of past bonds. Mollie really enjoyed learning more about law enforcement and its different aspects. She also said that she “learned that having a job is not as easy as it seems.”
All three girls really enjoyed and valued their experiences this summer at their various workplaces. Each learned important things about the fields in which they were interested in.
