Has anyone ever bullied you? Have you ever spread rumors about anyone? Bullying can be devastating. That’s why The Briarwood School goes above and beyond to educate students about bullying in the hopes of avoiding any incidents.
On Sept. 29, the Briarwood Student Council hosted its first Lunch and Learn for the new school year. These events, which allow an open, safe forum for students to discuss issues or concerns, are a tradition that started in 2014.
The topic of this lunch discussion was bullying, and the student turnout was primarily juniors and seniors. A member of the Executive Student Council began the meeting with the question, “What does it mean to be a bully?”
The Executive Council shared words that describe a bully and victim. Many students brought up words such as jerk, racist and hater.
One junior said, “There are moments that the bully and the victim become one; a victim starts out getting bullied then becomes the bully.” The consensus of the students was that they must be educated on these roles, their dynamics and what we can do to prevent bullying. Many students left the meeting with a new perspective on the way people treat others.
These Lunch and Learns bring people closer together through experiences, and this is one Lunch and Learn that no one will forget.
