Home Safe Home: DeAndre Hopkins’ Touchdown Challenge
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and, this week, nearly 300 supporters gathered at The Astorian for the annual Home Safe Home Around the World gala to benefit AVDA, Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse. A highlight of the evening was Houston Texans DeAndre Hopkins #TDCHALLENGE, in which he announced he will donate $1,000 to AVDA for every touchdown he scores this month. Hopkins feels passionate about this charity and invites Texans teammates and fans to join him in the challenge.
The gala, which included a live auction with competitive bidding - particularly on the autographed Houston Texans DeAndre Hopkins jersey - raised $432,577 to benefit AVDA. The evening also featured a spectacular tasting menu served by 12 of Houston’s top chefs, paired with boutique wines by renowned local sommeliers.
Renowned attorney Richard Mithoff was honored at the event with the Joseph D. Jamail Award for Justice for his commitment to advocating for others, and Trini Mendenhall was honored with the Heart of Houston Award for her dedication to service and philanthropy. KPRC Local 2’s Khambrel Marshall served as emcee and the Honorable Eric Andell was auctioneer.
Stacy and John Andell, Meg and Preston Kamin, and Brooke and Jeff Wise served as Co-Chairs for the event, Karen Freedman as Gala Chair, Lynn Kamin as Underwriting Chair, and Helen Bernard as Auction Chair.
AVDA has served the Houston community for 36 years, providing services to families victimized by domestic violence, and educational resources to prevent violence in the future. Let’s all join DeAndre Hopkins’ in his challenge and root for many touchdowns this season and, in particular, this October.
